Shiseido Co Ltd is the largest Japanese producer of cosmetics and one of the world's three largest cosmetic companies. It was founded in 1927 and gained the reputation of perfume and accessories producer. Its brand is internationally known and holds mighty positions in the USA, France and Italy.
Shiseido was founded by a Japanese Yushin Fukuhara, descendant of Chinese medicine pharmacists. In 1872 he opened a new pharmacy in the luxurious Ginza district where for the first time all medicines were made of imported European raw materials on a by-order basis. Each customer was greeted with such hospitality and care that soon the Western-style pharmacy turned into one of the most popular places in Tokyo.
Some time later, the first company store and Camelia club were opened to unite faithful amateurs of Shiseido cosmetics. By 1937 the number of club members made up approximately 10 million people, that is, each sixth Japanese joined the club! Eudermine lotion was the first cosmetic product based on a scientific formula. Japan was conquered: 130 thousand bottles of smoothing tonic were sold during the first three months of sale, and it is still popular now, a century later. It remains one of iconic products of the brand.
In 1953 Shiseido founded the world's sole research institute of advanced technologies in the field of cosmetics and aromacology in Tokyo. It performs scientific analysis of everything referring to cosmetics, as well as analysis of the effect produced by smells, images or sounds on human behavior and psychological condition. Amazing results of the investigations have proved that certain smells stimulate brain activity, help overcome depression and constantly support immune system activity.
